As you read this, student “management teams” are pouring over financials, deciding on production levels, and spending money on R&D, advertising, and TQM. Team committees are designing brilliant and innovative features for their products never before seen in the market. And others are developing TV, radio, and print ads that will tickle the senses and convince their customers to buy. In a few minutes, they will hear a speaker teach them how to communicate effectively and give them tools to become better leaders. After that, they’ll head over to the dining hall for a bite to eat and get right back at it. This afternoon, they’ll face off on the volleyball court to blow off some steam and clear their minds. Then they’ll head to dinner, and guess what? They’re right back at it, working on improving their company to tower over the competition. Tonight they’ll gather to hear another speaker who will captivate them with her struggles in business and life, and describe how she overcame those obstacles to succeed. She will impart to these students what true success is; that maybe it can’t be measured solely in dollars and cents. Then they will head back for more work on their company, and finally, after a long, productive, exhausting day, they will hang out with Annnnnd... WE’RE OFF!!!VOLUME 19, ISSUE 3 • SUMMEr 2017Unlocking the Future... NEWSsome new friends over an ice cream and talk about their day. Finally, they’ll fall into bed, and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow. Sound familiar?Yes, we are in beautiful Williamsport, hosting the first of our five 2017 sessions of energetic and eager young people who will take the PFEW journey this summer! It was a record year for student recruitment, with 3,482 students applying for this year’s sessions. We anticipate hosting a record 2,244 students this year, making it the largest program in our 39-year storied history! We are profoundly grateful to our very generous donors and supporters who made this record year possible. Over 1,000 companies, civic organizations, foundations, and individuals worked tirelessly, devoting their time and resources so these young men and women can experience this year’s program. Because of them, PFEW is the largest, most respected summer economics education program in the world, dedicated to teaching our young people to understand and celebrate the wonders of our free enterprise system.
