VOLUME 20, ISSUE 3 • FALL 2018Unlocking the Future... NEWSPFEW 2018 – OUR 40TH SUMMER PROGRAM WAS ONE FOR THE AGES!What do you get when you mix 2,019 eager high school students, 120 dedicated volunteer Company Advisors, 31 passionate Speakers, 40 professional Competition Judges, 8 hard-working Interns, 15 diligent Resident Hall Advisors, 2 beautiful college campuses, and thousands of loyal supporters from across the state? Pure PFEW Magic. As our historic 40th anniversary PFEW summer program came to a close in August, we departed Williamsport with collective feelings of exhaustion, amazement, wonder, accomplishment, and above all, gratitude for your support that enabled 2,019 Pennsylvania students to discover the wonder and pure magic of business and free enterprise. Our mission has never been more important. The American free enterprise system has created more wealth, lifted more people out of poverty, and created more opportunity for economic and personal growth and prosperity than any economic system in the history of mankind. In a time when we face great challenges, it is our mission and responsibility to provide our next generation of leaders with the knowledge, skills, and determination to build on the successes of free market economics. Did PFEW make an impact? Consider these thoughts from this year’s participants:“I have taken a variety of business classes, but none of them gave me an experience that a week of PFEW gave me. The motivational speakers had great life lessons to offer. To me PFEW was an extraordinary experience with a multitude of opportunities to enhance multiple skills, and I have to say I had an amazing time doing it.” - Jacob Johanson, Perkiomen Valley High School“I have learned so much about the business industry and before this experience, I was undecided about what career I wanted to go into. But now that I have gone through PFEW, I think that I might want to look into pursuing a career in marketing… The program also included some amazing and extremely inspirational speakers that completely changed my life.” - Lissette Foster, Derry Area HS“It was a great learning experience of leadership and business. I gained extensive knowledge about the business industry which I believe will guide me towards success.” - Madison Kirshner, Mount Pleasant Area High SchoolThese are among the hundreds of powerful testimonials we received from our students this summer, but the true impact of PFEW will be realized when these young people enter the workforce in the years to come. They will remember the lessons learned, the skills developed, and the confidence and belief in self they discovered this summer at PFEW that will drive them to success in career and life. continued on page 3Each year we are proud to recognize the teams that performed just a little better than their competitors. Once again, 120 teams were vying for wins in the four major business competitions, all hoping to secure the coveted title of Top Company in their week. While every young woman or man who attends PFEW is a winner, here are the teams (and their Company Advisors) who did just a little better than their competitors this year.Management SkillThroughout the week each company is engaged in a computer simulation where they make twelve quarterly decisions requiring them to determine production levels, selling price, and expenditures on marketing, product development, market research, quality management, and banking. Based on these decisions, the simulation evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the decisions on a 0-100 scale. These companies earned the highest cumulative score for their three years of operations:--- Week I ---D1 – Jonathan Davis Company Advisor Melody Kamerer, Hudson Business Service, LLC, Butler, PA--- Week II ---B3 – MyMower Company Advisor John DeMasi, Financial Consultant, Drexel Hill, PA--- Week III ---B2 – HydroTech Company Advisor Ken Snyder, Jr., Advisor to USOC Coaching Ed. The bad news is that record heat and rainfall in Central Pennsylvania forced us to cancel the Executive Fitness competition in three of the four weeks of PFEW 2018. The good news is that we were able to compete in Week II, and the team that rose above the competition this year was, fittingly, from the Fitness Equipment Industry:--- Week II ---E2 – Smart BodyCompany Advisor John Jensen, Hamot Medical Center (ret.), Erie, PATHE RESULTS ARE IN…Marketing/Advertising CompetitionWe introduced eight new industries this year which challenged the students to decide on a product and then create a comprehensive marketing and advertising campaign to sell their product. Competition was fierce, and the new industries were well received by students and Company Advisors alike. On Friday, the students presented their campaigns to a panel of experienced advertising Judges. These presentations included defining their target market, discussing product features and selling price, performing radio and tv commercials, and displaying print and other advertisements along with a website and social media campaign. The winners of this year’s Marketing/Advertising Competition are:--- Week I ---C1 – Gigglez Company Advisor Pat Martin, DVL Incorporated (ret.), Ponte Vedra, FL--- Week II ---C1 – VIGORCompany Advisor Chris Hoffman, Brown’s Super Stores, Inc., Slatington, PA--- Week III --F3 – Nit Fit Company Advisor John Lafferty, CellMyLight, Inc., Thorndale, PA--- Week IV Lycoming ---B2 – SomaticCompany Advisor Tom Hermanowski, First National Bank, Erie, PA--- Week IV Penn ---H2 – Gen22Company Advisor Meg Wherrity, Temple University, Philadelphia, PAStockholders PresentationAlso on Friday of each week, the student companies present a formal shareholders annual meeting to a panel of experienced Judges. They must also explain in detail their business strategy, dividend policy, and plans for future success of their company. ALL OF US !Now look at the quantitative impact of PFEW from our 2018 Post-Program Survey:98.3% of students said they had a better understanding of the American free enterprise system and their role in it. 96.9% said that PFEW improved their perception of business. 97.5% said that what they learned at PFEW would benefit them in their personal lives. 98.7% of our students said their sponsor’s money was well invested.59.2% of students said that because of PFEW they would consider starting their own business. These statistics prove without question that PFEW has a powerful impact on attitudes, perception, knowledge, and passion for business in Pennsylvania. But the real power lies in knowing you provided over 2,000 students an unprecedented opportunity packed with knowledge to assume roles as our business and community leaders of tomorrow. That’s the magic of PFEW, and for that, we thank you.continued from frontCompany Advisor milestonesHow do you define dedication, loyalty, commitment, honor, service? You look in the eyes and hearts of the men and women who have lived their very lives defining these lofty ideals. This year, our 120 Company Advisors celebrated a combined 1,040 years of service to PFEW. That’s right, a millennium spent educating and mentoring the youth of Pennsylvania. I’m sure you can see why we call them the Heart and Soul of PFEW.We realize what a huge commitment one year is, and we are incredibly grateful for that year. But we do a little something extra for the wonderful men and women who celebrate three, ten, fifteen, and twenty years of service. This year we were privileged to honor twenty-seven extraordinary men and women who celebrated service milestones with PFEW. These dedicated Company Advisors spend a week away from family, work, and home year after year because they believe that educating our youth is the key to Pennsylvania’s successful future. They selflessly share their experience, wisdom, and knowledge of free market economics to open doors, shed light, and clear paths for our next generation of leaders. Here are the 2018 PFEW milestone celebrants followed by their years of service. SMG is a national program run by the SIFMA Foundation that allows students to learn about capital markets in an experiential way in the classroom. Students (4th to 12th grade) form teams and research and invest virtual cash in the stocks or bonds of their choosing, competing regionally and nationally according to their grade level. We are excited about this new opportunity! Get involved! Please visit www.pfew.org/SMG.php for more information, or email Jeremy Kropf at jeremy@pfew.org.Next >
