Creating a Lasting Legacy
Creating a Lasting Legacy
PFEW Students For many of us as we age, we begin to consider our legacy, what impact we want to make on the generations to come. Of course, we want to take care of our families and friends, but we also may want to support the causes we believe in long after our lifetime.

There are many ways to extend your support of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education. Whether it is through wills and living trusts, charitable gift annuities, beneficiary designations, real state, endowed gifts, or any of the myriad other options available, there are established, proven methods to take care of your family, minimize your tax burden, and make a real and lasting impact on the Foundation.

Planned giving is very personal and unique to every individual. It can be confusing, intimidating, and overwhelming, but it all starts with a simple conversation. If you are thinking of leaving a lasting legacy with the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, we encourage you to contact President & CEO Karen Musante or VP of Marketing & Development Scott Lee. Their contact information is listed below and they will be happy to answer your initial questions and point you in the right direction.

Of course, to find the best plan for you, it is important to consult with your attorney and financial planner. They are the experts who will create a plan tailored specifically to you – a plan that ensures your family is taken care of, your tax burden is minimized, and the benefit you provide to the Foundation aligns with your goals and dreams.

Thank you for considering the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education in your estate plan. We look forward to helping you create a lasting legacy for Pennsylvania students for years to come.

Click on any of the following topics to expand them for more information:

Expand Me ENDOWMENT GIFTS
Endowment gifts provide immediate benefit for you, and lasting impact for the Foundation. We currently manage fifteen separate funds in our permanent endowment, appropriately named The Frederick W. Anton III Endowment Fund after our founder, primary sponsor, and long-time Chairman of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association who passed away in 2017.

You may contribute to one of our existing funds or establish your own. We invest all endowed gifts, and each year a portion of the income from the invested money is used to fund scholarships for students to attend PFEW. The remaining funds are reinvested to ensure continuing support of your legacy and our Foundation’s mission.

You may use the following assets to make Endowment gifts: Cash, Real Estate, Securities, Tangible Personal Property

Expand Me MEMORIAL GIFTS
Memorial and tribute gifts are wonderful ways to honor a loved one who has been impacted by the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education. A memorial gift is one made in the memory of a person (or people) who has passed away. A tribute gift is one made in the name of a person or people to recognize or celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, birth of children, or other life milestones.

You may use the following assets to make Memorial or Tribute Gifts: Cash, Real Estate, Securities, Tangible Personal Property

Expand Me BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS
Do you wish to continue supporting the Foundation’s work after your lifetime? An easy way is by naming the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education as a beneficiary to receive a portion of your assets after you’re gone. It is separate from your will, easy to implement, and a simple way to support the Foundation’s mission for years to come.

You may name the Foundation a beneficiary of the following assets: Retirement Plans, Life Insurance, Commercial Annuities, Bank Accounts, CDs, and Brokerage Accounts.

Expand Me CHARITABLE BEQUESTS - Gifts from Wills or Living Trusts
A great way to provide a lasting legacy is by leaving a charitable bequest to the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education through a will or a living trust. It allows you to grow your assets today, plan for your family’s wellbeing, and later leave a gift that will allow the Foundation to serve students in your name for years to come. Bequests are simple, flexible, and easy to plan and implement.

You may use the following assets to make Charitable Bequests: Cash, Real Estate, Tangible Personal Property, Appreciated Securities, Closely Held Stock

Expand Me CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES
A Charitable Gift Annuity allows you to support the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education for years to come and secure a fixed annual payment to you for life. A Charitable Gift Annuity provides federal income tax benefits as well.

If you are under 60 years of age or don’t need the payments until a later date, you may defer when you start receiving your annual payments, for instance upon your retirement.

You may use the following assets to make Charitable Gift Annuities: Cash, Real Estate, Tangible Personal Property, Appreciated Securities, Closely Held Stock

Expand Me CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS
Charitable Remainder Trusts give you the ability to make a significant gift to the Foundation, receive annual payouts, and potentially receive federal income tax deductions and avoid up-front capital gains tax liability.

There are generally two ways to receive payments from Charitable Remainder Trusts:
  1. Annuity Trust – pays you each year a fixed dollar amount that you determine from the start. Your income from the trust remains the same regardless of investment performance.
  2. Unitrust – pays you a variable amount each year based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of your assets. If the value of the trust increases, your payout increases, and vice versa. The amount of your payment is reevaluated each year.

You may use the following assets to make Charitable Remainder Trusts: Cash, Real Estate, Retirement Plan Assets, Tangible Personal Property, Appreciated Securities, Closely Held Stock

Expand Me CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS
This type of gift vehicle basically is the opposite of a Charitable Remainder Trust in that you establish a trust for the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, keep the assets for your family, and the annual gift from the trust goes to the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education. Similar to the Charitable Remainder Trust, there are two types of Charitable Lead Trusts:
  1. Charitable Lead Annuity Trust – pays the Foundation a fixed dollar amount each year that you determine from the start. The gift you provide to the Foundation remains the same regardless of investment performance of your assets.
  2. Charitable Lead Unitrust – pays the Foundation a variable amount each year based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of your assets. If the value of the trust increases, your payout to the Foundation increases, and vice versa. The amount of the Foundation’s gift is reevaluated each year.

You may use the following assets to make Charitable Lead Trusts: Cash, Real Estate, Appreciated Securities, Closely Held Stock

Expand Me REAL ESTATE
Gifting Real Estate is a great way to make a considerable and lasting donation to the Foundation without impacting your day to day finances. When you give property you have held for at least one year, you qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction, you avoid paying capital gains tax, and you no longer have to worry about maintenance, property taxes, sale of the property, insurance, or any other hassle normally associated with real estate holdings. You can simply deed the property directly to the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education!

There are many ways to give real estate, all with varying short and long-term tax benefits. You may give real estate through:
  • An outright gift
  • A gift in your will or living trust
  • A retained life estate
  • A deferred charitable gift annuity
  • A bargain sale
  • A charitable remainder trust
  • A charitable lead trust
  • A memorial or endowed gift

Whichever real estate vehicle you choose, all will have a profound long-term positive impact on the Foundation for Free Enterprise, and they will allow us to continue our mission to educate Pennsylvania’s youth for generations to come.
